In the dance world, I'm known as "Miss Kenda". I have trained, performed and taught throughout the world - a few years off & on in Europe including Turkey, Greece, Russia, Italy and in England and Australia and throughout the United States.

I've been known to say "If ballet was easy, it would be called football", and I mean that, not to put down any sport or activity or to boast, but to make a point that ballet is very difficult.  It takes physicality, a strong emotional commitment and a sense of humor in order to "survive" in this art form. Ballet, or dance in general, is a full-body work out and joins the heart and soul which makes ballet/dance a communicative form. Joining these two builds that dancer into an artist of quality and depth.

A 36+ year career as a dancer, instructor and professor of dance, receiving my MFA later in life, I have built Children's ballet programs, coached collegiate dance teams to Nationals, Choreographed super bowls and half time productions (as well as intimate and concert dance productions), taught at Boston Ballet Center for Dance Education, colleges and universities (BU, BC, PVCC, SCC, Dean College, etc) and more. I coach privates now, but am also currently teaching in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area at Adage Dance Studios (101/Raintree) and Royal Dance Works (7th Street/Greenway), am the technique coach for the Cactus Shadows High School JV and Varsity Pom Teams and artistic director of my own dance company (NOT studio) AZDance Group, where I integrate ALL populations with professional dancers (info

Classically trained by Mr. Kelly Brown of ABT (American Ballet Theater soloist and Agnes De Mille's assistant), I have had a varied and successful career in dance both with companies, training facilities and educational institutions.

I also train dressage, sport & pleasure horses at Shadow Hill Ranch, choreograph/coach dance teams and dabble in art and photography. I am the proud (and tired) mother of two wonderful children, Shaeleigh & Colin.

Gail Newbury, mother, owner, trainer & manager of her Shadow Hill Ranch, passed in July of 2012. "Mom"/Gail was a loved equestrian, trainer and coach, concert-pianist, piano teacher and coach, judge (dressage, combined driving dressage, vaulting), ballet-pianist, wife, mother and grandma to many. Shadow Hill Ranch is continuing today through the efforts of her daughters, Kim Newbury and Kenda Newbury. Shadow Hill Ranch is an equestrian facility that trains and sells quality and versatile sport horse prospects.

Around for about 50 years, S.H.R. has always been a small but reliable source of great equine stock which clients trusted. Known for good mannered, light-mouthed, nice trots & reliable horses, S.H.R. is now offering a few horses to the public to good homes.

Many former S.H.R. horses started & trained by our mother and shown by her or her daughters, Kim or Kenda, and by students, have gone to national and international fame (Vaulting teams, 3-Day Canadian Olympic Trials, US Driving Championships, Dressage awards, Hunter/Jumpers, Eventing, Trail & Cow horses, here in the United States, Canada & abroad)

Please view the sale horses on this site, and then contact us to preview them live.

Shadow Hill Ranch is located in the beautiful foothills of Rio Verde overlooking the majestic Four Peaks in North East Scottsdale.

Gail's husband, Kent, still lives on the property and oversees the general workings of the ranch. Kent is a nationally recognized composer, having over 300 works published. Kim manages the finances and sales and Kenda trains, maintains, works and shows the horses.

Our energetic team includes Joe & Kim, Gina, Jo and Eliseo with Dr. Bill Tryon, Susan Sebastian and Alberto Leon continuing the fine care of the horses.

My Equestrian Background

Like my dance history, my horse background is varied. I believe a 'classical approach' in all "forms", is needed. Stressing quality over quantity. Do correct, though perhaps "slower", and the longevity will last. I and SHR do not push our horses but work them to their strengths, building up what is weak or incorrect. Correctness & Quality in whatever you approach is KEY!

My inspiration and training in life and outside pursuits have always been my parents: mother Gail Newbury, a professional pianist & clinician, a Dressage, Hunter, Combined Driving, Quadrille and Vaulting trainer, coach, clinician & judge and my dad Kent Newbury, a professional and international composer, director and clinician. I have been a 'r' dressage judge, a 'r' combined driving dressage judge, an 'l' combined driving dressage judge and a R quadrille judge and quadrille choreographer.

My mom brought in outstanding clinicians to SHR or we would attend some throughout the Southwest. I was blessed to have worked with these Influential Equestrian Coaches (incomplete list):

Dance . . .

In Life, In Dance, With Family, With Animals...

Quality over Quantity is Paramount

It is artistry, honesty of movement & pure technique that will trump tricks and flash every time.

Longevity is my goal, thus my approach. Something to Remember
